The Communities Around Kleine Brogel

The Base is small and has no housing on it, so families have the unique opportunity to live in the Nederlands-speaking Belgian community. Most families find homes in one of the many villages near the base. The area is mostly rural, and your neighbors may include cows, sheep and horses. Almost all of the homes are brick with wooden or tile floors. Each village usually has a bakery where fresh delicacies are made daily to tempt you. There should also be a small grocery shop not too far away. Many of the villages have weekly markets where fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and fish can be purchased. Neighborhood restaurants are also available serving up good Belgian food which can be as simple as pancakes and waffles or as special as steak with a special sauce and potatoes. Frituuren are the equivalent of the fast food restaurant and once you taste the Belgian fries, McDonald's will never be the same! It is the Belgians who take credit for inventing this universal potato favorite and after sampling them, their argument is a sound one!

For the people at Kleine Brogel Air Base, there is no major city nearby, but several small towns which offer much. Peer and Bree are a nice towns with restaurants and shops. There are indoor pools and movie theaters nearby. The Netherlands has the larger city of Eindhoven. Brussels is about an hour away and Amsterdam, an hour and a half away.

Belgium's neighboring countries within easy driving distance include The Netherlands, Germany, France, and Luxembourg. There is much to see and do in this part of Belgium. It just takes time and an adventurous nature.
